In this unique concert as part of the Yorkshire Sculpture International, Opera North’s acclaimed Chorus of 36 voices illuminated the architectural space of Leeds Art Gallery’s Tiled Hall.
This specially curated programme of music explored the ability of sound to transform and affect space. Bringing together the early polyphony of Byrd and Gabrieli with the minimalism of Arvo Pärt and John Cage, this was an immersion in the sculptural power and enduring mystery of the human voice.
The programme:
William Byrd – Haec dies
Arvo Pärt – Nunc dimittis
David Lang – I want to live
Cornelius Cardew – Paragraph 7 from ‘The Great Learning’
Jacob Handl – Haec dies
John Cage – ear for EAR
Andrea Gabrielli – Alla battaglia
