We partnered with Leeds Civic Trust and artist Jill McKnight for a special blue plaque unveiling.
The Mawer Group have quite literally left their mark on some of Leeds most iconic buildings. From Leeds Town Hall to Hepper & Sons Auction House (now Iberica), they provided carving and decorative stonework for many structures, civic and secular buildings in West Yorkshire.
Catherine Mawer (1803-1877) was a successful businesswoman and master sculptor who ran the family stone-yard on Great George Street. She completed the carvings on Leeds Town Hall following the untimely death of her husband, Robert, and has many works throughout the city, including the Listed Mawer Memorial, Woodhouse.
Leeds based artists Jill McKnight and Pippa Hale joined us to unveil these special plaques, which have been kindly sponsored by The Chambers and Mawer researcher, Linda O’Carroll.
Leeds Civic Trust are grateful to the Henry Moore Institute for hosting this event.
